Fashion, food courts, lingerie, fire bombing, suicide, free parking—welcome to the mall.  Winner of the Guardian's Not the Booker Prize and Glenfiddich Writer of the Year.

Why would one woman threaten to kill another for a pair of discounted shoes? Why are cross-dressers drawn to mall car parks? What do impulse buys have to do with rioting? How are some malls "vampiric" while others are "pregnant?" And why are market research companies hiding the truth from us?  A mash-up of fiction, essays and true stories, this collection tells of the rise of the most iconic symbol of our modern age the shopping mall. From more than 100 interviews and confessions, Ewan Morrison re-tells the true-life tales of those who work, shop, and even find love inside their walls. With wry wit, insight, and compassion, he reveals how malls manipulate our emotions, how they are an ideal space to meet a new lover or to kill yourself, and how they are taking over the world. As shopping malls spread round the globe at the amazing speed of one new mall every 72 hours, and everyone, in every country ends up wearing the same fashions, Tales from the Mall gives us a page-turning tour of the history of the mall and a vision of our coming future. Packed full of terribly tweetable facts and gut wrenching, sometimes hilarious stories; this book will change the way you think about your hair color, your loyalty cards, the global economy, and your boyfriend or girlfriend—forever.

Tales from the Mall Ewan Morrison 9780956308375 Books

A creative blend of fiction and nonfiction pieces, linked by the theme of shopping malls. I'd expected a collection that was more opinionated, something with more of an agenda, but the pieces are freer than that. If you come to the book already pro- or anti-mall, you'll find things to reinforce your view; but the pieces are really more about people and emotions and lifestyles than they are for or against malls. A surprisingly touching collection. Highly recommended.

Tales from the Mall Ewan Morrison 9780956308375 Books Reviews

Tales from the Mall is fair entertainment and passes the day. I was not feeling any need to recommend the work but then as the "Not The Booker" prize unfolded this last weekend things became far more interesting. If you want to have a fuller and more darkly humorous experience reading this book then you really must check out this Guardian article first [...]
The Bells are ringing.
An engaging collection of short stories, essays and reflections on our contemporary condition,by the author of Distance, Melange and Swung. at their best, like Morrison's novels, these Tales From the Mall capture both the beauty and banality of 21st century urban existence, exemplified in the phenomenon of the mall. The writing evokes Amis at his best, but without the wearying cynicism of Yellow Dog and London Fields. Sketches and experiments, there is no nonetheless sufficient depth here to keep fans of Morrison's novels busy while they wait for the next one.
In this wonderfully inventive book, factual observations around the history and sociology of the mall are woven together with short stories that touch on the book's themes (alienation, identity, family, community, money, brands), which, as the writer has intimated elsewhere, are intended to strive towards a new kind of literature aimed at a readership who are never more than a click away from a google search. Morrison's skill lies in his ear for natural dialogue, his human empathy, and his facility for teasing out the fears, preoccupations and conflicted desires that drive human behaviour.
Thus the hapless I Dunno Dave, Starbucks junkie, on a self-help `mission' to the mall to get a girl's phone number. Or the jobless advertising exec in her forties attempting to clutch at continuity by means of branded possessions in a disintegrating relationship. Or the former Soviet Union émigrés attempting to adjust to a town square centred around privatised shopping. The insecurities and misunderstandings of modern life permeate the stories here, which are sometimes horribly funny - as in the tale of the scabrous, racist `Rena the Cleana' - but often very sad, too, as with the pensioner escorted off the premises of a flagship mall for the crime of consuming a non branded snack.
Morrison is best when he touches on the loss of traditional identity that characterises the often terrifyingly `liquid' condition of modern life, where the modern citizen is encouraged to eschew traditional bonds and roles in favour of shopping around for something better. He is also gifted at capturing the nuances of speech and human interplay in the multicultural cast that populates his stories. The book ends by evoking the kind of airless `junk space' that Rem Koolhaus defined in 2001 - modernity as endless shopping mall - in a suitably airless and disembodied limbo that, along with much of the rest of the book, serves as an indictment of three decades of social policy that have rendered malls the new centres of civic life. If only all new books were as keen to peel back the brand names and find the human stories beneath.
Looking for a little historical romance or the latest vampire tale or some slap dash mummy porn?

Then you might went to keep moving on. "Tales From The Mall" is a fantastic admixture of short stories, notes, essays, digressions, missives, memoirs, shopping lists and jottings around the life and times of shopping malls. Contemporary ain't the half of it. Think of it as a story mall.

Shopping malls have become our cathedrals, consumerism our religion. Morrison is not afraid to let everyone know it. Not afraid to look deeper into modern culture and see what drives our collective narrative.

This catch cry novel is voiced in the second person narrative. A nice touch given the subject matter at hand. Ideas bump and slip against each other, catch onto each other and turn into something altogether new.

If your imagination is lacking or you like your plot and dialogue spoon fed, this is probably not the book for you. If you like the sedative safety of fiction set in a bygone era, best look way.

But if you'e looking for a new take on the novel, step right up.

It's quite a read.
An interesting way to look at the mall culture of the UK and US but it is jarring and some parts are well written and fascinating and other parts are just drab.
